Bioregionalism

Overview

Bioregionalism holds that people should organise their lives around bioregions, territories defined by watersheds, landforms, soils, climate, and native species rather than by state lines. It began in the San Francisco Bay Area in the early 1970s and was revived in the 2010s as bioregioning, with an emphasis on regenerative economies and place-based learning. In design it means sourcing materials, techniques, and forms from within the region a building or product will live in.

Origins

Bioregionalism rests on a single claim: the right unit of human life is the ecological region, not the state. The claim took organised form in San Francisco in 1973 (Planet Drum Foundation), the word bioregion followed around 1975 (Van Newkirk), and the founding essay set out the contrast that still defines the movement, the extraction of a place by outsiders against its reinhabitation by people who intend to stay ("Reinhabiting California", Berg and Dasmann, 1977). The idea was then developed in poetry (Turtle Island, 1974), in a political programme of decentralisation (Dwellers in the Land, 1985), and in one region that many people can name. Cascadia, mapped in the 1980s from northern California to Alaska, follows the Columbia and Fraser watersheds and the temperate rainforest belt straight across the Canadian border, which illustrates the argument for ecological rather than political boundaries. The founding observation still holds: most people cannot say where their water comes from.

Core Principles

Bioregionalism is a set of practices more than a doctrine. Three recur in every version.

The Watershed

The watershed is the preferred unit because it is visible on the ground and because water connects everything inside it. Bioregional mapping starts with where rain falls and flows, then layers soils, vegetation, and Indigenous territories over the political map (Aberley, 1993). The purpose of the map is to show how little political boundaries correspond to ecological ones.

Reinhabitation

Reinhabitation is the word for learning to live in a place as if you meant to stay (Berg and Dasmann, 1977): restoring what is damaged, fitting livelihoods to what the land sustains, building culture from the particulars of the region. It rejects both wilderness preservation, which removes people, and conventional development, which ignores place. The timescale is generations, which ties it to regenerative systems and their concern with a place's capacity to keep renewing itself.

Local Knowledge

Bioregionalism holds that those who have lived longest in a place, human or otherwise, carry knowledge no outside expertise replaces. That has drawn it toward Indigenous land practice, not always carefully, and toward the traditional ecological knowledge catalogued under Lo-TEK. It also explains the movement's preference for commons-based design: forests, fisheries, and watersheds are managed better by those who depend on them than by owners who do not.

Materials From Here

Buildings and construction account for roughly 37 percent of energy-related carbon dioxide emissions, and much of that is in materials shipped across continents. Designers have taken up bioregionalism mainly here: if a thing is to belong to a place, its substance should come from that place, and the limits of a regional palette become the generator of form.

The Regional Palette

Bioregional design at the studio scale uses the region as its material catalogue. In the Rhône delta that has meant wall panels pressed from sunflower stalks, tiles crystallised from Camargue salt, and bioplastics cast from algae, all sourced within a day's drive of Arles (Atelier LUMA, since 2016). Ceramics fired from the clay of named fields, and glass melted from sands collected in more than 80 countries for To See a World in a Grain of Sand (2017), make the same point through soil: the colour and the imperfections come from the place (Atelier NL). Straw, hemp, and regionally grown timber form the palette argued for in Material Reform (Material Cultures, 2022), along with the case that the palette does not exist until the regional supply chain is rebuilt to carry it. Each is a demonstration that a material's origin can be read in the finished object. The limit is throughput: a salt tile or a sunflower panel is made in tens, not thousands.

Building in Place

At building scale, bioregionalism appears as rammed earth from the excavated site, timber from a mill within a hundred kilometres, stone from a regional quarry, and vernacular forms fitted to local climate. Story of Place, a method that precedes design with a study of how a site's geology, ecology, and human history have shaped each other, exists so that a project extends those patterns instead of interrupting them (Regenesis Group). This overlaps with distributed manufacturing in its reliance on small regional producers, and with peripheral technology in its interest in tools developed outside industrial centres. The argument is that regional supply chains, more than regional styles, are what make architecture belong to a place.

Critiques and Current Practice

The main objection is that bioregions do not exist until someone draws them. Ecological boundaries are gradients, and choosing the watershed over the climate zone or soil type is a cultural decision. Decentralism offers no defence against a region that chooses badly, and the early movement's enthusiasm for "native" ways borrowed Indigenous frameworks while saying little about Indigenous land claims. In materials, a strict regional palette can cost more carbon than an imported one if the local supply chain is immature, since a half-empty truck from a small mill can emit more per tonne than a full ship, and some regions simply lack what a building needs. The revival of the 2010s shifted from mapping to practice under the verb bioregioning: the bioregion as the unit of a regenerative economy (Wahl, 2016), of food, care, and material systems (Thackara, 2015), and of climate action (Brewer, 2021). Bioregional Weaving Labs (2021) fund people to connect landowners, businesses, and communities across a single landscape, and a conservation framework now divides the planet's land into 185 bioregions for funding purposes (One Earth, 2020). For designers, bioregionalism adds a spatial limit to the circular economy: materials should circulate, and within a defined region.
